Sugar Beach has hosted an ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournament from the Senior Circuit from 1st to 5th December 2009. A première for the Sun Resorts 5* property situated on the West coast of Mauritius. 33 competitors participated in this tournament held in the presence of Lukasz Kubot, ATP ranked Polish tennis player – 99th in the Single ranking and 12th in the Double ranking.
Organised at Sugar Beach under the aegis of ‘Advantage Tennis’ of Kamil Patel, ATP ranked Mauritian player and managing the Tennis Pro services at Sugar Beach, the ITF Senior Circuit tournament has enabled its organsiers to promote sports and tourism, as much appreciated by both local and foreign participants. “We are very happy of the success of this first edition of the tournament. We even had two German tourists who were in Mauritius for a golf tournament and who decided to extend their stay in order to participate in the tournament” explains Kamil Patel.
The tournament took place on the six synthetic grass tennis courts of Sugar Beach in a very good atmosphere with a festive mood spilling out at the Sports Bar of the hotel. Due to the temperature, most matches were played at night. Thanks to this ITF tournament, a number of players were able to score points on the Senior Circuit and are now ranked on that international circuit.
On the last day, after all finals, an exhibition match was organised with Lukasz Kubot as guest star. A set was played between Lukasz Kubot and Eddy Clarisse (Advantage Tennis) against Lukasz Skowronski (Tennis Pro at Le Touessrok) and Kamil Patel. The local pair won it with a 6-4 score. Lukasz Kubot then remitted all medals and prizes to winners.
2010 will surely see the organisation of such a tournament at a greater scale.

Virgin Holidays just announced at its annual ‘Virgin Holidays Awards Dinner’ in London that Sugar Beach has won the much coveted ‘Gold Award 2009 - Best Hotel Indian Ocean’. Another piece of good news for the Indian Ocean based hotel group is that of La Pirogue winning the ‘Silver Award 2009 - Best Hotel Indian Ocean’ at the same event.
“We are extremely pleased by this double accolade awarded by Virgin Holidays to our two properties. Sugar Beach and its sister hotel La Pirogue winning respectively Gold and Silver Awards is an appreciable recognition of the value of these hotels. We were already very proud of the credit given to Mauritius as World Leading Island Destination at the World Travel Awards. Now, we cannot but be content about this association between a world-class destination and highly appraised hotels,” says Arnaud Martin, Chief Marketing Officer of Sun Resorts.
This is a remarkable achievement for Sugar Beach, Sun Resorts’ property on the West Coast of Mauritius, which reopened as a five star hotel in August 2008 after extensive renovation works. The hotel offers a unique taste of contemporary tropical warmth. The enhanced plantation style of the hotel, combined with a resolutely contemporary touch, enables its team to offer a unique experience to its guests.
“We are extremely honoured by this excellent award given by one of the most important Tour Operators in United Kingdom. This is a testimony of the appreciation given to the hotel by Virgin Holidays, its partners and clients,” says Andrew Slome, General Manager of Sugar Beach.
La Pirogue is the most authentic of all Sun Resorts’ properties. Set in a lush tropical garden with more than one thousand coconut trees, La Pirogue offers a unique feel of Mauritian easy living with lavish offers of food, beach activities and entertainment. La Pirogue stands today as one of the most iconic hotels in Mauritius with incredible occupancy rates throughout the year and a long tradition of repeater guests.
“This Silver Award is yet recognition of the good work done by the whole team of La Pirogue and which enables our hotel to be one of the best loved hotels in its category. I cannot but share this award to this team,” says Nicolas de Chalain, General Manager of La Pirogue

Sugar Beach is again hosting its annual artistic painting exhibition, featuring the works of some of the most talented Mauritian artists. This cultural event once again puts emphasis on the unique atmosphere of Sugar Beach, plantation style hotel with a contemporary feel.
“For us, as hotel operators, it is a way to promote our island and all its rich assets to the international traveler, who is more than ever keen to learn about the social and cultural aspects of the destination they are visiting.
