Meet Neha Rampersad - Sales and Events Lead at Sugar Beach

Everyone at Sugar Beach has this mentality from the ground staff and waiters to the Sales and Events Leads, like Neha Rampersad, who has been with Sugar Beach for three years.

We chatted to hear about her role in the hospitality industry and this is what she had to say:

Why did you choose this job?

I feel like the job chose me! I am a very curious person by nature and so while I was making the most of my internship with the hotel and working in different departments, I found myself drawn to the Food and Beverage department. But at this time, there was a huge number of people interested in the banqueting sector, so the next thing that I found interesting was Sales and Events. The field piqued my interest and I followed what was calling me.

What motivates you in your work environment?

I started my career at Sugar Beach as a Guest Relations Officer and when I got the opportunity to pursue a path as a Sales Coordinator, my greatest motivation was the excitement and the prospect of event organisation. My inspiration to follow my passion has also been fuelled by my family who always supports me in what I do. 

What about Sugar Beach makes you excited about working there?

The stunning location of the resort on the west coast of the island and the people I get to work with every day. 

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

The day starts with the most important task of attending to my emails and ensuring that I get to any requests about events and happenings at the resort. I then typically conduct educational visits and host VIPs, and I constantly make sure that I am communicating the brand and essence of the resort. On an event day, there are often many tasks that need to be done and I am in charge of coordinating the event from A to Z.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

I’d like to see myself as a manager in five years and want to work hard and do everything I can to get there.

What do you do in your free time?

This might sound like a bit of a “cliché” but in my free time I enjoy being at home, shopping, reading and every now and then, exploring some quiet and relaxing parts of our beautiful island.

What is your life motto?

If you dare to dream big, work hard to achieve what you desire and let the noise of success be the applause. 

How do you handle an angry or dissatisfied customer?

I’ve learnt that there’s a “magic formula”! Here it is: The first thing you need to do is listen to the guest. Then you need to keep yourself as calm as possible while acknowledging where the fault is and apologise for creating a feeling of dissatisfaction. Then, while calming the person down, you need to think of one or two solutions and propose the best one. It’s also important that once the issue has been resolved, you follow up on it. By doing this, you will end up creating a positive mindset and relationship and this allows you to ensure you are always able to make your guests happy. 

Working in the hospitality industry implies being in a good mood all the time, do you agree with this?

Oh yes, definitely! To work well in this industry, I would say that you have to feel good from your inner self first. Being humans, we all have mood swings but it’s important to not let this affect your work. In this industry, you need to learn how not to mix up personal and professional issues, and once you know how to apply this, you will be able to master your emotions and thrive at your job. This skill is really an asset. 

What is your favourite thing about Sugar Beach?

The combination of our unique selling points at Sugar Beach (such as the plantation-like style and incredible offerings) and the stunning beach create an enchanted atmosphere and I love being a part of that.

Where do you see the tourism industry in the 10 years from now?

Travellers and tourists these days prefer to buy experiences rather than just spend on products like many of the travellers of the past. If we can maintain our hospitality rather than focusing too much on modernisation, we will be shining as much as other destinations. If we keep promoting our “roots”, the industry will be kept alive I think. 

How would you encourage someone to join the industry?

I would be very clear about this; just like anything in the world, if you are not passionate about it, it is not meant for you. Whether you are a woman or a man in this industry, it doesn’t matter, you will need to work as hard as your colleagues in order to thrive and climb up the different levels. It is a wonderful industry, where you meet people from around the world and where you can learn so much but you need to be willing to put in the work. 

Why do you think Sugar Beach stands from all the rest?

I think it stands out mainly because of its prime location on the west coast with beautiful sunsets and the long stretch of beach. 

What signature offerings do you think are the best at your hotel? 


Sugar Beach plays to the plantation concept and theme in its architecture but also in its offerings. The theme is brought through in many ways such as gifts we give to our guests which include special Mauritian sugar. If you look at sugar crystal through a microscope, it looks like a flower. Because of this, we also include flowers in our décor and as welcome gifts to guests in the form of hair clip or pins.

What one experience at Sugar Beach do you think is a “must-do”?


Our current “forte” is the Buddha-Bar Beach. It is the only place on the island and in the Indian Ocean region where you can enjoy stunning mixology experiences, some delicious Asian-fusion dishes as well as the iconic Buddha-Bar music.

What, in your opinion, is the ideal length of stay for a holiday in Mauritius to ensure guests can make the most of both the hotel and the surrounds?

An average of 10 nights would do fine. In this way, the guests are able to enjoy the beaches and have ample chance to explore some of the places of interest on the island itself.
